Movement as Medicine for Nonspecific Chronic Low Back Pain

Programme Overview:

This CPD course aims to provide GPs with the most current research information supporting the use and prescription of ‘movement as medicine’, for patients with nonspecific chronic spinal pain.

The aim is to provide GPs with the knowledge and practical skill to classify the current movement patterns and or movement limitations of patients presenting with spinal pain.

This course aims to have the GP understand the underlying exercise principles of targeted, staged-progressive, isolated and quantifiable exercise. Further to inform the GP about the effects of these exercise principles in order to apply them as a treatment intervention or prescription for patients.

The activity aims to provide the GP with knowledge to understand exercise as a major intervention for these patients. This information will provide GPs with the key knowledge to educate patients and to prescribe and refer patients’ movement prescriptions to consulting exercise therapists.

Learning Outcomes

  • Evaluate the movement limitations and determine the back pain classification of these movements in patients presenting with spinal pain and recommend appropriate therapy.
  • Explain how the physiological mechanisms and the specific musculature which are related to chronic spinal pain are affected by the specifics of exercise intervention.
  • Evaluate the exercise principles and exercise modalities of consulting rehabilitation programmes to enable the GP to refer patients to specialist rehabilitation options which are evidence based and best practice.
