Physiotherapy for sciatica
getback™ physiotherapy for sciatica alleviates pressure on the nerve and strengthens surrounding muscles, promoting healing and improved functionality.
Sciatica is a common and often debilitating condition characterised by persistent pain, tingling sensations or numbness that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve.
The sciatic nerve originates from the lower back (lumbar region) and extends through the hips, buttocks and down each leg. The development of sciatica is primarily associated with compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve.
A group of small but powerful muscles running along the length of the spine – the multifidus – function to stabilise the spine, maintain proper alignment and control movements.
When the multifidus muscles are weak or imbalanced, there is increased stress on the spinal discs and nerves, including the sciatic nerve.
Strong and well functioning multifidus are critical in preventing and managing sciatica.
Sciatica and the deep spinal muscles
How we treat sciatica
getback™ offers specific, targeted and safe treatment to strengthen and mobilise the deep spinal muscles associated with sciatica.
During an initial consultation to review your condition, your physiotherapist will gain a deep understanding of how sciatica is impacting you.
A customised treatment plan will be created, which could begin with hands-on physiotherapy or movement-based therapy.
The benefits of improving strength and flexibility in the deep spinal muscles to treat sciatica include:
Improved spinal support – strengthening the multifidus provides better support to the spine, reducing pressure on affected nerve roots and sciatic nerve irritation.
Enhanced range of motion – improved range of motion in the multifidus contributes to spinal flexibility, enabling more fluid movements and reducing muscle imbalances which can lead to sciatica.
Prevention of recurrence – a strong and well-balanced spine is less susceptible to injury and nerve compression.
When pain and loss of strength is involved, it’s vital for patients to start movement-based treatment in a safe and supported way. The most important factor is the ability to control loading through the full range of movement.
getback™ physiotherapy for sciatica is facilitated by rehabilitation devices which precisely control loading during each exercise in your customised plan.
The devices are designed to provide resistance to match the muscle’s capacity as it moves through its full range of movement. This changing and accommodating resistance ensures the exercise is not overly stressing the muscle at various points of weakness and ensures a safe overload throughout the movement.
Regardless of load, your movements will be smooth through the full range of movement and your exercise is always supported and safe.
